Wind blowing through the trees
On a cold moonless night
A woman peeps through the window
Not knowing what she'll find
Lights coming toward the house
Her heart skips a single beat
A soldier at the door begins to speak
Sad, tragic news he's come to bear
He tells of a man who fought bravely by his side
And of a country's unfortunate loss
He hands her the medals
Along with a letter folded tight
Trembling with fear she hesitates the choice
She slowly takes the gifts
Tears streaming down her face
Air is scarce
He thanks her kindly
For the man she raised
Then leaves in haste to hide his own pain
The letter is so simple
Mom I'll love you till the end
I am sorry for the pain I caused
The choice was right for me
Please understand my decision
And always remember
I loved you till the end
I wrote this poem 7/15/05, I was working for a collection agency at the time. It came to me while I was on a phone call. I have attempted to write poetry since but have not done a very good job, I stop before I start.
